Creative Character Designs

I deign these characters in "Drawing for Animation" class.

This was really fun project. We developed our designs from doodles, silhouettes and textures.

The reason these characters are special and original is that I inspired by abstract shapes and created what I was seeing.

And we picked up 3 words randomly, we developed 3 characters from combining words
My word are "Musical, Fire engine and Cheetah"

Musical + Fire engine.

In top left, that is a very first idea for musical fire engine. That is cute but a weak design in terms of details and story. So I developed the car design and props for him

Cheetah + Fire engine

The first design is really  dumb...
but I'm happy with the final one.

This is "Musical + Cheetah"
I like this design but it is LITTLE gross..?
I didn't render this with shading.

This project was really helpful to me for create NEW characters.
I felt the limitation to make characters before.
I learn we can find creative designs from everywhere
(it can look stupid in first design but don't worry)

Freeze Fridge ! -Concept Animatic

The first assignment is about "The Door"

I had several ideas for that but everything was rejected because they didn't make sense somehow

Here is the example..

This is my very first idea but there is no reason why the donkey wants to be a black horse! That's the big issue because it is bad concept idea without proper reasons

These are my final idea images.
I start with 7images and sentences.

The concept statement is "Extreme decision causes extreme situation"
The basic idea is about the fridge door.
The fridge door keeps opening and the guy tries to close it.

I came up with this idea from my mother.

My mom always says,
"check the fridge door when do close the freeze door. It opens sometimes~"

But storywise, it dosen't make sense that he passes out in the ending
because he makes the fridge locked.
He can drink the tap water if he is going to die of thirst!
So I decided to make him hungry instead of being thirsty

Here is my first animatic

As a first crit, the reactions of him are violent...
(honestly I tend to make gags violent when I make an animation.. I don't know why :(
I should make a limit of gag like Loony tunes style..)

The important thing I learn from the class crit is ..

"KEEP THE TONE"

I've never thought about the tone of animation.
I just drew, drew, drew and drew ........

but I should think about my animatic tone. It is kind of mood in the movie~

I changed his reaction parts by trying to keep the tone of the beginning

much better!

*Also, the teddy bear thing.. there is no reason I put it in the middle and ending.
It doesn't need to exist in his life... at all...

I took out the reactions and teddy bear baby~

I will be better next animatic!!

Concept animatic: Post it Man

Concept image

One of my favorite short animations is "Paper Man"
That's why I put the title like that.

This concept project is about montage so I put several sequences for "Post it Man".

Also coloring is not important if you make storyboard or animatic but you can put some shading or color as gray scale.

I put color on this animatic because I wanted to make it show how to different between his reality and imagination.
(it took more more more time to finish this work because of COLOR)

But it looks cool, isnt it??? :)

Concept animatic: The Theif

This is my final project in fall semester. The basic subject is about "Thief"
Someone tries to steal food and the other wants to keep it.

My idea is from this illustration by Scott Campbell
I really like his drawing style and idea.
I bought his artwork book and found this one.
It inspired me for my final animatic idea!
